On Friday, Congressman Bill Huizenga, Co-Chair of the Great Lakes Task Force, will be the keynote speaker at the 6th annual Science in Action Symposium at Central Michigan University. The symposium will focus on the success of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) as well as renewed efforts by Congress to continue to fund the initiative. The event is being hosted by Central Michigan University's Institute for Great Lakes Research (IGLR) and will be held in the Biosciences Building Auditorium from 9 AM until 12 PM. Congressman Huizenga has been a leader in the effort to make the Great Lakes a national priority. He has worked in a bipartisan manner to build support for the GLRI in Congress, successfully worked to get President Trump to fully fund the GLRI in his latest budget, and is currently working to increase the impact the GLRI can have on West Michigan, Michigan as a whole, and the entire Great Lakes region. The Institute for Great Lakes Research (IGLR) takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the complex environmental issues affecting the Great Lakes basin. This area includes associated ecosystems such as tributaries, wetlands, and coastal regions, as well as the lakes themselves. The IGLR is committed to promoting and facilitating collaborative research and education on the Great Lakes. IGLR faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized experts on coastal wetlands, conservation genetics, fisheries, invasive species, limnology, aquatic population modeling, microbial ecology, landscape ecology, and geographic information sciences. External agencies supporting research include the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Sea Grant.
