Weekly Column: Working for Southwest Michigan
Washington,
October 31, 2024
As your voice in Congress, my top priority is serving you and addressing your top issues – including energy prices, the cost of groceries, and the overall economy. Here are some solutions I have supported this year to make life more affordable for individuals, families, and small businesses in Southwest Michigan. Soaring energy prices are making multiple facets of everyday life more expensive. For this reason, I voted for the Lower Energy Costs Act to restore American domestic energy dominance. To meet growing energy needs here locally, I have led the charge in Congress to repower Palisades Nuclear Power Plant. This will provide our community good-paying jobs, affordable energy, economic opportunity, and 800 megawatts of clean reliable energy for more than 800,000 homes. In addition to fuel costs, our local farmers are facing record-high labor costs for H-2A visa workers, which have climbed to $18.50/hr due to federal regulation. I am proud to lead the effort to stabilize this wage rate with the support of 120 Members of Congress. This is the most practical and agreed-upon way to alleviate this financial burden and give our local family farmers a chance to compete, stay in business, and provide high-quality, locally sourced food. A leading cause of inflation has been Washington’s out-of-control spending. This has resulted in Americans paying $13,000 more this year than when the Biden-Harris Administration came into office. To address this affordability and debt crisis, I introduced and advanced bipartisan legislation to rein in the spending that is fueling inflation and tackle our national debt before it wreaks even more havoc on family budgets across Southwest Michigan. I will never stop fighting for our community or working to address the issues that impact Southwest Michigan the most. Elections are a vital part of our American story. No matter who you support, please participate, and make your voice heard on or before November 5th.
