Weekly Column: Big Government Alert
Washington,
September 3, 2024
Since the Biden-Harris Administration took office, inflation has climbed over 20%. In fact, Americans are spending over $13,000 more annually to buy the basics than they were just three years ago, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. There is no doubt that Americans continue to suffer due to high prices at the grocery store and the pump, but the solution to this problem is not more big government intervention. Sadly, Vice President Harris has revealed a plan to put bureaucrats in Washington in charge of mandating how much even eggs cost at Harding’s Market, Meijer, Family Fare, or Kroger here in Michigan. Goodbye, free markets. This is big government at its worst. It is totally unacceptable and ignores the real affordability crisis American families face. Countries like Venezuela, Argentina, and the Soviet Union have all tried to set price controls just to watch them fail miserably. This leads to shortages, higher prices, and significant economic harm. Our nation was founded and has thrived on the principles of free market economics. Unelected bureaucrats should not be empowered to determine the cost of groceries. Government should help foster an environment of opportunity and economic mobility, not bureaucratic mandates. In that same vein, in order for the next generation of Americans to have that opportunity, Congress must address our national debt. The interest we pay to finance the $35 trillion debt has now surpassed our defense spending. Later this year, these interest payments are projected to become our nation’s second-largest overall expenditure — leaving little room for addressing other critical unmet needs. As Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Fiscal Forum, I am leading a collaborative approach to improving our country’s fiscal and economic condition by cutting wasteful federal spending, passing a balanced budget amendment, cracking down on costly executive orders, and more. As your voice in Congress, I will continue to support commonsense policies that address our nation’s fiscal trajectory and make life more affordable.
