Huizenga Fixes a Million Dollar IRS Error, Saves Ottawa County Over a Quarter of a Million Dollars
Washington,
May 15, 2024
Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) announced the resolution of a dispute between Ottawa County and the IRS resulting in a correction of over a million dollars in favor of Ottawa County. Last year, Congressman Huizenga learned that the IRS was misapplying multiple quarters of payroll taxes for Ottawa County during the 2022 filing year. Ottawa County Treasurer’s Office sought an appeal of the IRS action and asked Congressman Huizenga and his office to intervene on behalf of the residents of Ottawa County. While the appeal was taking place, however, the IRS continued to wrongly penalize and fine Ottawa County for an additional sum of $265,310.03. After months of battling to correct the erroneous application by the IRS of the Ottawa County payments, Congressman Huizenga was able to successfully resolve this million-dollar dispute. If this mistake by the IRS was not caught and corrected, it would have resulted in serious financial damage to Ottawa County. Additionally, because of Huizenga’s actions, the IRS removed additional penalties and fees that had been incorrectly applied to Ottawa County. “This failure by bureaucrats at the Biden IRS would have resulted in a significant negative financial impact on Ottawa County and the people that proudly call it home,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga. “I am glad we were able to correct this $1,000,000 plus error by the IRS and remove more than a quarter of a million dollars in fines and fees that had been wrongly applied. I will continue to battle Washington’s bureaucracy head on as I fight for residents of Ottawa County and Michigan’s 4th Congressional District.” |
