Huizenga on Fox Business: We Have to be Forward-Thinking About the Challenges Posed by Artificial Intelligence

Yesterday, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-04) discussed the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and some of the challenges this poses for society as well as the need for policymakers to address concerns on the front end of development. Video of Congressman Huizenga’s conversation on the “Evening Edit” as well as text highlights are available below.

We must be forward-thinking on setting AI guardrails

The problem with government it tends to be reactive. We only react when there is a crisis, whether it’s banking, housing, war, or anything else. AI is something we have to get on the front edge. We have to be on the front of the wave of this.

On concerns posed by Artificial Intelligence

Earlier today I was with a technologist who works out here in New York and he said the basic assumption in the past was if there was a technological advancement it was good. That meant we were doing something more efficiently, faster, etc. That isn't the case necessarily with AI and we can't view it that way. We have to view it through a different lens. I hope that government isn't going to just rely on the tech people, and it cannot just rely purely on academics. You’re going have to get policy people in right from the very beginning to be at least a part of that.

On the need to think differently regarding how we address AI

The simple fact is we have to think about this very differently. I was with a technology company not that long ago, and I asked can humbly suggest something? Could you add an ethicist or theologian to your staff to start thinking about what this is existentially? Your reporter was talking about brain-like quality thinking out of a machine. That's very, very different than anything that we've seen before.

On the fact that it may feel sci-fi but the challenges posed by AI are real

When you think of soul, morality a conscience that is something that separates us from a machine. This is a little skynetish. It's a little sci-fi feeling sometimes but it's real. It is here today and we better be on the front end of this and get serious about it.
