Weekly Column: Republicans Want to Lower Prices for SW Michigan

Last week, House Republicans passed a major part of our Commitment to America. The Lower Energy Costs Act is designed to strengthen our economy and lower prices by unleashing American energy production, modernizing our sorely outdated permitting process, and increasing domestic processing of critical minerals.

Over the past two years, too many Southwest Michigan residents have struggled to make ends meet. Whether it’s heating our homes or putting gas in our cars, we have all felt the pain caused by soaring energy prices. These massive price hikes are made worse by the Biden Administration’s misguided energy policies.

While crafting the Lower Energy Costs Act, House Republicans listened to voters. We heard first-hand stories from Americans across all walks of life about the challenges individuals, families, and small businesses are facing due to the skyrocketing cost of energy. Then we set out to lower costs and help keep more of your money in your pocket

This pro-American energy bill repeals a $6 billion tax on natural gas which will help lower costs for renters, homeowners, and small businesses. Additionally, this legislation eliminates a $27 billion EPA ‘slush fund’ that would use taxpayer dollars to finance the radical left’s out-of-touch agenda.

This commonsense bill streamlines National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews and sets a reasonable one-year deadline for environmental assessments as well as a deadline of two years for environmental impact statements. This will help prevent infrastructure projects from getting bogged down in endless bureaucratic reviews.

Importantly, this bill recognizes that the road to American Energy Independence will never go through the Great Lakes. The Lower Energy Costs Act protects our drinking water and Lakeshore economy by reaffirming the Great Lakes are off limits to drilling.

Instead of relying on hostile nations for our energy needs, House Republicans have put forward a pro-growth package that increases domestic energy production, lowers energy prices, and unlocks opportunities in communities across our nation.
