Huizenga Secures Funding for Grand Haven and Holland Harbor Dredging

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga released the following statement on dredging funding for both the inner and outer harbors in Grand Haven and Holland being included the latest Army Corps of Engineers Work Plan. Grand Haven is scheduled to receive just over $1.7 million for dredging and maintenance operations while Holland will receive nearly $1.65 million. Work is projected to begin on the projects in the summer. Last year, Congressman Huizenga led the charge to secure funding for Holland Harbor when it was originally left off of the Corps’ Work Plan.

“Harbors along Lake Michigan serve as a major source of economic opportunity, good-paying jobs, and growth in our communities,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga. “I am glad to continue to have productive conversations with the Army Corps of Engineers that deliver positive results and prioritize not only the Great Lakes but communities across West Michigan.”

Joy Gaasch, President of the Grand Haven Chamber of Commerce:  “The Grand Haven Harbor and port facilities are a critical part of our area’s economy supporting delivery of a variety of bulk commodities to be used throughout West Michigan.  Funding for both inner and outer dredging are critical to the full functionality of both recreational and commercial activities.  We appreciate Congressman Huizenga supporting and securing this funding.”

Phil Brewer, President of Brewer’s City Dock in Holland: “The recently announced funding for the maintenance of both the inner and outer portions of Holland Harbor is great news for us at Brewer’s and the markets that we serve.  Protecting the Lake Michigan shoreline and investing in water infrastructure is critical to West Michigan.”
