Huizenga Votes to Reform Mental Health Care, Strengthen Medical Research

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) released the following statement after voting in support of bipartisan legislation to boost critical research to defeat cancer and rare diseases as well as reform how our nation addresses mental health care:

“Nearly everyone in West Michigan has a friend or family member who has been impacted by cancer, a rare disease, or the scourge of opioid addiction. The 21st Century Cures Act is an example of how Congress can achieve bipartisan results to the challenges facing West Michigan families without adding to the debt.  Right now, potentially lifesaving medical breakthroughs are being slowed by bureaucratic red tape.  The 21st Century Cures Act will help cut through this red tape, promote innovation, and encourage the development of new cures and treatments at research facilities in Michigan. Additionally this critical bill provides vital resources to combat the recent wave of drug addiction plaguing our nation.

"This important legislation also addresses another major issue facing West Michigan families - mental illness. For too long, the federal government has spent taxpayer dollars on duplicative and ineffective programs. The 21st Century Cures Act will make significant reforms that modernize how mental health care is delivered, provide resources for state and community treatment centers, and bring hope to both patients and their loved ones."

The 21st Century Cures Act passed the House this evening by a vote of 392-26.
