WZZM: Huizenga takes snowmobile tour of West Michigan

WZZM - 6:46 PM, Jan 17, 2014

The Newaygo Sports Park was the starting point for a two-day congressional snowmobile ride. U.S. Congressmen Bill Huizenga and a member of the Michigan Snowmobile Association left Newaygo Friday morning.

The annual ride brings attention to the economic and recreational importance of snowmobiling in Michigan. It's also a chance to hold town hall style meetings with voters at the places snowmobilers often stop, like small, out-of-the-way restaurants and taverns.

"This is exposure for Pure Michigan. How great this area is, and recreationally what it means, not only on the fun level but frankly on the economic level," said Rep. Huizenga.

Bill Manson of the Michigan Snowmobile Association says the weather this season has been very good for snowmobiling. "We had snow on the ground in December, and when we have snow in December, between Christmas and New Year, that is one of the big weeks. Everybody is off and up north snowmobiling."

The tour ends Saturday afternoon in the village of Beulah in Benzie County.
