Canceling tours of White House due to cuts 'laughable'
The Detroit News - Marisa Schultz March 7, 2013 Michigan's Republican congressional members were stunned when the Obama administration decided Tuesday to cancel White House tours because of staff shortages it attributed to the sequester cuts. They tried to stop a potential tourism drop from the Great Lakes State by reminding Michigan residents the Capitol Building where they work remains open for tours — in addition to other Washington attractions. "The notion that modest across-the-board cuts would cause the White House to close its doors is laughable," said U.S. Rep.Bill Huizenga , R-Zeeland. "I would encourage residents of the Second District who have planned a vacation to Washington, D.C., after March 9th to come visit the Capitol Building where my staff and I will be more than happy to take you on a tour of the People's House," Huizenga said. U.S. Rep.Candice Miller , R-Harrison Township, also urged visitors to come to the Capitol. "I want to let those Americans planning a trip to Washington, D.C., to know that the Capitol will remain open," she said. "My office will continue to give those who I serve, the constituents of Michigan's 10th congressional District, a full and complete tour.' |
