Huizenga Supports Extension Of Disaster Assistance To West Michigan Fruit Growers

Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) issued the following statement after U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack extended disaster assistance to 72 Michigan counties including Allegan, Benzie, Lake, Kent, Manistee, Mason, Muskegon, Ottawa, Oceana, Newaygo, and Wexford:

"I applaud the leadership of Governor Snyder, the attentiveness of my colleagues in the Michigan Delegation, and the actions of Secretary Vilsack to extend disaster assistance to West Michigan fruit growers. This spring, Michigan crops were devastated by inclement weather that cost some growers upwards of 90% of their harvest. When I met with fruit growers whose crops were tragically impacted by the weather, they weren't looking for a hand out, they were looking for help. This designation allows growers to become eligible for assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA), including emergency loans. While I am relieved to see the Administration has approved access to FSA loans, I continue to believe there is a role Congress can play in helping farmers manage their risk by improving crop insurance so Michigan's family farms avoid being pushed to the brink."
