Huizenga “Disappointed" Balanced Budget Amendment Failed

U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, MI-02, said today that “Washington missed yet another opportunity to truly change course on its spending crisis” by failing to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

While a majority of the House voted for the measure 261-165, a Constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds majority.

Huizenga, a cosponsor and strong supporter of H.J.Res. 2, said, “While an ideal Balanced Budget Amendment would require a GDP percentage cap and a supermajority to raise tax rates, H.J. Res. 2 was a good start. America’s economic security has been pushed to the point that something to start controlling spending is better than nothing. I’m frustrated that even this BBA failed today, simply because Democrats – 11 who voted for it last time – were more concerned about the next election than the next generation. It’s time for transparency and an honest conversation with the American people about our budgeting process. It’s time to cut the smoke and mirrors because at this point, the consequences of failure are too great.”
