U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, MI-02, released the following statement after the House passed the Budget Control Act by a vote of 218-210 tonight, sending it on to the Senate for an as-yet unscheduled vote there:
“While I believe this bill does not go nearly far enough, fast enough to reduce spending, the consequences of failure are too high. This plan is a realistic approach that reflects my firm commitment to install government spending controls and long-term accountability, and it now includes a stronger requirement that before we let the President raise the debt ceiling again, we pass a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on to the states, to let America decide whether their federal government should balance its checkbook just like we must do in Michigan. It is now the Senate’s turn to pass a plan that includes real solutions that will address the spending crisis that got us into this mess, a plan that will reduce spending and restore fiscal discipline to our country. The Senate Majority Leader and the President must stop talking and get to work: No more budget tricks. No more accounting gimmicks. No more empty promises. Enough’s enough. We must do what is best for the economic security of our country.” ### |
