Portage Central Student Wins 2024 Congressional Art Competition

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) announced Nora O’Neill, a student at Portage Central High School, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition. Nora’s piece “From Garden to Table” will be sent to the U.S. Capitol and put on display with other works of art created by students from across the nation. Nora created her piece using oil paint, portraying vegetation from her backyard garden. This was only her second time attempting a piece with oil paint, and it took her over 50 hours to complete.

This year’s runner up was “Watashiato” created by Zeeland West Student Elizabeth Le, and finishing in third place was “Mariposa” by Zeeland West Student Elise Rynsburger. Each entry was evaluated by a panel of local art and design professionals. The top 10 pieces submitted by local student artists are available to view on Instagram. Congressman Huizenga met with the top ten finalists of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition on Saturday at the Richmond Center for Visual Arts at Western Michigan University.

“I applaud Nora for the exceptional artistic skills she displayed in her piece From Garden to Table,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga. “All of us were very impressed by Nora’s talent, dedication, and attention to detail. I wish her the best as she pursues a STEM degree in college next year, and I look forward to seeing her in Washington D.C. this summer for the national reception.”
