Huizenga Statement on Afghanistan
Washington,
August 20, 2021
Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) released the following statement regarding the devolving situation in Afghanistan. Earlier today, President Biden gave a speech that simply doesn’t square with the situation on the ground in Afghanistan. Independent reports depict the Taliban cracking down and making it more difficult for Americans and our allies to reach the airport. Videos show Afghans taking desperate measures, with one clip showing a baby being passed over the airport wall to American troops. The situation is much more dire than the President presented. The President also seemingly misrepresented our current standing with our allies. This debacle of a withdrawal caught our allies off guard and has placed an incredible strain on the NATO relationship. Reports detail how even the Prime Minister of the UK was unable to reach President Biden for a full day and a half. The President’s mismanagement of the withdrawal has endangered Americans on the ground, under cut our nation’s standing among our allies, and has no doubt emboldened our enemies. My office continues to receive communications from Americans in country, as well as constituents who served with Afghan allies that supported our mission and remain trapped in Afghanistan. We are doing our best to advocate and assist through the State Department for their safe evacuation. |
