Huizenga Supports Legislation Increasing Special Immigrant Visas for Afghans Who Assisted U.S. Forces
Washington,
July 22, 2021
Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI), released the following statement after supporting the Allies Act, bipartisan legislation to increase the number of Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) for Afghans who supported the U.S. Military in Afghanistan. Congressman Huizenga was a cosponsor of this bipartisan legislation that passed the House today by a vote of 407-16. “As American Forces withdraw from Afghanistan, the interpreters who played a critical role supporting our men and women in uniform face a clear threat from the Taliban. The Allies Act increases the number of Special Immigrant Visas by 8,000 and reforms the application process so qualifying translators and their immediate family members who are being targeted by the Taliban are not improperly denied a visa. This is the right thing to do and I am glad to see this life-saving legislation garner such strong bipartisan support.” |
