Today, Congressman Huizenga announced that Kaylynn Barrett, a student a West Ottawa High School is the winner of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition. Kaylynn’s piece “Ruby Red Thoughts” will be sent to the U.S. Capitol later this year to be displayed with works of art created by student artists from across the nation.

Kaylynn crafted her piece using an Indonesian technique known as Batik, which uses wax resistant dye on fabrics. This year’s runner up is “State of Mine” created by West Ottawa student Ava Reynolds, and the third place finisher for the 2021 competition is “Inaccurate Portrayal of a Pencil Witch: Volume Two” by Jody Brown of Zeeland East. Each entry was evaluated by a panel of local art and design professionals. The top 12 pieces submitted from local student artists are available to view online here.
