Huizenga Statement on House Passage of Bipartisan Great Lakes Water Infrastructure Package
Washington,
July 29, 2020
Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga released the following statement after the House passed the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). This legislation will strengthen and protect the Great Lakes by authorizing construction at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam, ensuring ports and harbors along the Great Lakes are properly maintained, expanding the study of ways to mitigate shoreline erosion and high water, and instructs the Army Corps of Engineers to identify and report PFAS contaminated facilities to Congress. “The ecology and the economy of the Great Lakes are uniquely interconnected,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga who serves as Co-Chair of the House Great Lakes Task Force. “This legislation addresses crucial infrastructure issues across the Great Lakes region and specifically authorizes the Army Corps of Engineers to begin construction of preventative measures to stop Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. Additionally, this bipartisan bill expands the costal resiliency study to include a more comprehensive approach to preserving the Great Lakes. Lastly, WRDA takes the important step of requiring the Army Corps of Engineers to identify, report, and develop plans to clean up areas of PFAS contamination that fall under the jurisdiction of the Corps.” As a leader on Great Lakes preservation, Congressman Huizenga testified before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in February on how to protect the Great Lakes and the economic importance of maintaining infrastructure across the Great Lakes. |
