Huizenga Congratulates Ludington Student on Winning 2018 Congressional Art Competition

Over the weekend, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) met with the top 12 Second District Congressional Art Competition Finalists at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum in Grand Haven. The winner of the 2018 Congressional Art Competition is Elise Doan from Ludington High School with her work “Flooded Headspace.” This year’s competition included 65 entries from high school students across West Michigan. The students’ art was evaluated by a panel of local art professionals.

“Congratulations to Elise for creating such a descriptive and intricate work of art,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga. “Her skill and talent will be enjoyed by thousands of people when ‘Flooded Headspace’ is put on display in the U.S. Capitol.”

“Flooded Headspace” will soon be hung in the U.S. Capitol for the next year alongside the winning art work from congressional districts across the nation. Elise will also have the opportunity to participate in a congratulatory ceremony in Washington, D.C. to celebrate her impressive achievement with other talented young artists from around the country.

The 2018 Congressional Art Competition runner-up piece of art entitled “Impressionable Energy” was created by Anna Gwiazdowski of Ludington High School and will be displayed in Congressman Huizenga’s Grandville Office.

This year’s third place work of art was created by Maelin Oudemolen, a student at West Ottawa High School. “Happy” will also be displayed in Congressman Huizenga’s Grandville Office.

The top 12 pieces of art can be viewed on Congressman Huizenga’s Facebook page, as well as his Instagram. If you or your school is interested in participating in the 2019 Congressional Art Competition, please contact Sarah in the Grandville Office at (616) 570-0917.
