Huizenga Welcomes Chief Carmody as Guest for State of the Union Address

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) announced his guest to President Obama’s final State of the Union Address will be James E. Carmody, Director of Police and Fire Services for the City of Wyoming.

“Every day, first responders put their lives on the line to keep communities across West Michigan safe,” said Congressman Huizenga. “Law enforcement officials have an incredibly difficult job that requires them to make split second decisions. I am honored to have Chief Carmody, a leading voice for public safety in West Michigan, as my guest for the President’s State of the Union Address.”

James E. Carmody was sworn in as the Chief of Police for the City of Wyoming Michigan Police Department, in July of 2006. The Wyoming Police Department has a total compliment of 103 fulltime personnel, including 84 sworn officers and serves a diverse community of 73,000 residents. The City of Wyoming, Michigan’s 15th largest city, encompasses more than 25 square miles and sits on the southern border of Grand Rapids. In July of 2014, Chief Carmody was appointed as Director of the City of Wyoming’s newly formed Department of Public Safety and now leads both police and fire services for the city.

Chief Carmody holds certifications in Traffic Crash Investigations, Advanced Police Supervision, Drug Interdiction Operations, Police Ethics Training, and Racial Profiling Prevention Training. Chief Carmody also instructs on a number of topics related to police management and leadership principles. Throughout his career, Chief Carmody has received numerous community and police service awards. He currently serves on a number of professional and community committees, including; the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, Chairperson for the Greater Wyoming Community Resource Alliance, and as a board member for the Greater Grand Rapids Children’s Assessment Center (CAC). Chief Carmody also works as an assessor for the Commission on Accreditation to Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
