Huizenga Statement on Bipartisan Syrian Refugee Legislation

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga released the following statement after voting in favor of the Bipartisan American Security Against Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Act. This legislation passed the House by a vote of 289-137.

“While we are a nation of compassion and a nation of immigrants, we must ensure that the process for vetting refugees coming from war-torn areas in the Middle East is comprehensive and accurate. Today’s bipartisan vote demonstrates the real concern over terrorists potentially entering the United States posing as refugees. First, the SAFE Act requires the FBI Director to certify the background investigation of each refugee. Additionally, the SAFE Act requires the Secretary of Homeland Security, the FBI Director, and the Director of National Intelligence to unanimously agree that each refugee does not pose a security threat to the United States and then certify this finding to Congress prior to the refugee’s admittance into the U.S. The safety of the American people must be the federal government’s top priority and this bipartisan bill sets up the necessary protocols to ensure that happens.”
