Huizenga Leads House Effort To Hold IRS Accountable For Targeting Americans, House Votes To Slash IRS Budget

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) released the following statement after the House passed, H.R. 5016, the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act for 2015 by a vote of 228 to 195. This legislation includes the Huizenga Amendment which cuts over $788 million from the IRS Budget. Overall, the bill reduces the IRS Budget by $1.48 billion compared to last year's funding level. The Huizenga Amendment accounts for 53% of the total reduction to the IRS budget passed by the House.

"The House has sent the message loud and clear that the days of bureaucrats within the Internal Revenue Service acting with impunity are over. The culture that has taken hold within the IRS and led to the targeting of Americans based on their political beliefs or because they have adopted a child is entirely unacceptable. It is up to Congress to prevent the IRS from ever slipping back into its targeting practices. The best way to do that is to force the IRS to consolidate its resources and prioritize.

"Moving forward, Congress must continue to live up to its constitutional duty and use the power of the purse to hold agencies accountable that fail to act in the best interests of the American people. Other agencies that have adopted the 'we know better' mentality should consider themselves on notice."

On Monday evening, Congressman Huizenga introduced his amendment to hold the IRS accountable. Watch the video of his floor speech below:
