This morning, during an interview with WHTC's Gary Stevens, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) announced his intention to use Congress' "power of the purse" to cut the IRS' funding by 10%. The IRS has continued to act in a manner that is best described as bureaucracy run amok. From the agency's inability to produce emails of those under investigation, to the agency's outright targeting of Americans due their political beliefs, the IRS has lost its focus and severely damaged the trust between the public and the federal government.
On Proposing An Amendment To Cut The IRS Budget By 10% - A bill that funds the IRS is currently making its way through the committee process. It [the current legislation] cuts $341 million, but I don’t believe that is enough to send the message that we need to send. I plan to offer an amendment that cuts the IRS' Budget by 10% from last year's appropriation. That's about $1.3 billion and will return it [the IRS] to budgetary levels we saw a decade ago.
The Message Needs To Be Sent To The IRS: The Targeting of Americans Is Completely Unacceptable - Clearly, the IRS has too much time on its hands and not enough focus. The recklessness with which the IRS is acting, the hubris, the attitude that they approach the American people with is absolutely wrong. We have a job here in Congress to send that message to them. You cannot use your power in the IRS as a political weapon. It doesn't matter if you are left, right, or center. The IRS is one of the most powerful agencies we have in the government. For them to be injected into this process as a political weapon is simply wrong.
