Huizenga Announces Appointment Of Six Second District Students To U.S. Service Academies

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) announced that six students from across the Second Congressional District have received appointments from a U.S. Service Academy. These future Cadets and Midshipmen will report to their respective Academy this summer as part of the Class of 2018.

"Service to our nation is one of the greatest contributions an individual can make," said Huizenga. "Congratulations to these next generation leaders on receiving an appointment to a U.S. Service Academy. These students represent some of the finest in our military and bring with them the values instilled in them by their family and reinforced by their friends and their community. I have no doubt they will serve this nation with both dedication and distinction."

The following West Michigan students have received an appointment:

U.S. Air Force Academy

• Christopher Ryan Semrinec of Grand Haven

U.S. Naval Academy

• Evan Scott Akins of Hudsonville

• Mbabazi Diane Muhizi - NAPS (Naval Academy Preparatory School)* of Kentwood

West Point

• Ashleigh Patrice McCabe of Scottville

• Neil Brian Olson (Presidential Nomination)** of Muskegon

• Ryan Scott Fischer of Grandville***


* The Naval Academy Preparatory School can be recommended for students prior to attending the Naval Academy.

** These nominations are specifically for children of career officers and enlisted personnel. While an unlimited number of nominations are available, only one hundred candidates nationwide may be appointed through a Presidential Nomination.

*** Ryan Scott Fischer also received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in addition to his appointment to West Point, his preferred U.S. Service Academy, prior to his death in March.
