Huizenga Presents Local Hero With Bronze Star

Yesterday, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) presented Corporal Thomas E. Dracht with a Bronze Star for his time of service during the Korean War. Corporal Dracht earned this prestigious award for his "exceptionally meritorious achievement" in defense of Outpost Harry from June 10, 1953 - June 16, 1953 while serving as a member of Company K, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division.

"It is truly both an honor and a privilege to present Corporal Dracht with the distinguished Bronze Star for his acts of courage in June of 1953," said Huizenga. "We cannot thank our men and women enough for their service to our nation, however ensuring that out veterans receive the medals they deserve during their time of service is an important place to start."

Congressman Huizenga also presented Corporal Dracht with a certificate depicting his heroism. The citation reads that Corporal Dracht continually fended off "brutal nightly assaults by a numerically superior enemy force, Corporal Dracht volunteered to remain at Outpost Harry after his Company was relieved by Company B, 15th Infantry Regiment. He volunteered a second time to stay and defend the outpost with Company A, 5th Infantry Regiment, 5th Regimental Combat Team. For seven days and nights, Corporal Dracht ran back and forth to the ammunition hut to bring back much needed mortar and machinegun belts. His actions are in keeping with the finest military traditions and reflect great credit upon himself, Company K, 15th Infantry Regiment and the United States Army."

The event took place at Cambridge Manor, located on 151 South Port Sheldon Road in Grandville, Michigan.
