Huizenga: We Need Immigration Reform That Secures Our Borders, Improves Our Economy, & Works For West Michigan
Washington,
June 28, 2013
Last night, Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-02) discussed passage of the Senate's immigration reform legislation and what actions the House will take next regarding immigration reform on WWMT:
On immigration reform: • I want immigration reform that works for West Michigan, works for national security, and is good for our economy. • We know that we must have a secure border. We know that we need to have enforcement of current and future laws, and we have to build a long-term system that works. So far, I am not convinced the Senate bill does that … On concerns with the Senate Legislation: • This is a 1,200 page bill … there was a huge amount of text and provisions added in less than 48 hours. I am afraid that we are going to find out that the Senate had to pass a bill to find out what is in it. The House is going to be taking a much more methodical approach to immigration reform. On the Senate Legislation being taken up in the House: • The Senate bill isn't going to be taken up "as is" in the House. The Speaker of the House and our leadership has said very clearly that the House has its own process that we will be going through. |
