WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) - Ground was broken Thursday morning on a new clinic for veterans.

The VA clinic will be located in Wyoming, behind the Spartan Foods YMCA near Metro Hospital.

It will be nearly three times larger than the current clinic on Coit Avenue NE in Grand Rapids -- 96,000 square feet. And it will have more to offer, including primary care, dental, colonoscopies and more specialty services for patients with chronic conditions.

"This has been about a dozen years in the making. We've waited about a dozen years. We're going to have expanded services for our veterans at this facility, not only primary care and mental health, but some specialty care, too," said Mary Beth Skupien, director of Battle Creek VA health care delivery system.

The new facility will be able to serve between 30,000 and 40,000 men and women -- more than twice as many veterans as the current clinic.

It is scheduled to open in November 2014.
