Tell Your Story: Huizenga to Host Veterans History Project Event MONDAY in Holland

2nd District, MI, October 11, 2011 | Lauren Phillips ((202) 225-4401)
U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga invites area veterans of any war, those who supported war efforts, and their families, interested in learning more about how to share stories of their experience through the Veterans History Project to an event this Monday at 3:30 p.m. at the Holland Disabled American Veterans Hall #14.

Huizenga will introduce the Veterans History Project program and conduct a short example interview with an area veteran. There will be time for questions and a sign-up session after the interview.

Dr. James Smither, Director of the GVSU Veterans History Project, will introduce the interview process and be available after the example interview to answer questions about the program.

Veterans will be able to fill out registration forms to share their story, and sign up to schedule a time to do so after the session.

"It is one of my proudest moments in office to be able to meet, thank, and hear the stories of our brave veterans who sacrificed so much to serve their country, and the Veterans History Project is another way to share these stories," Huizenga said. "As the son of a disabled World War II Veteran, I know how important it is to be able to put their experiences on record for future generations."

Veterans History Project Background

The Veterans History Project was created in 2000 to document the stories of veterans and civilians who supported war efforts.

The Project collects firsthand accounts from U.S. Veterans of the following wars:

  • World War I (1914-1920)
  • World War II (1939-1946)
  • Korean War (1950-1955)
  • Vietnam War (1961-1975)
  • Persian Gulf War (1990-1995)
  • Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts (2001-present)
U.S. citizen civilians who supported war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, etc.) are also invited to share their stories.
