Today, September 16, marks the celebration of the 224th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. This document framed our government and continues to direct us. Limited government, checks and balances, enumerated powers: these are a few of the grand ideas proclaimed in 1787. The rights and freedoms “We the People” enjoy under this document stand to this day.
Americans at that time were in many ways no different than today. Before they agreed to a form of governing rule, they had to get it in writing and came to a consensus, much like how our laws are formed today. The founders did not want an ever-changing document, different one day than the last. America was to be ruled by firm laws. Chief among them they set the supreme law of the land, our Constitution. They believed that this law should be altered only to fix the most serious problems in government. Today, as excessive spending threatens to bankrupt our country, we need to take one more step in pursuit of the “more perfect union” the Constitution famously mentions. I believe that passing a balanced budget amendment would be one of the best ways we could celebrate the 16th of September this year.
