Huizenga Announces Appointment of Eight 2nd District Students to Service Academies

2nd District, MI, June 10, 2011 | Lauren Phillips ((202) 225-4401)
U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, MI-02, announces the appointment of eight 2nd District students to U.S. Service Academies.

The students were nominated by former Rep. Pete Hoekstra in 2010. Nominations are announced in December of a student’s senior year.

Service Academies give college-age Americans a four-year undergraduate education and prepare them to be officers of the U.S. uniformed services. After graduation, students are commissioned as officers for a minimum of five years in the active or reserve components of the military, the merchant marine, or the U.S. Coast Guard.

I’m proud to congratulate these outstanding students, who truly represent some of the best and the brightest of their generation, on their appointments to these great schools which will help them foster excellent futures. I know they will represent the 2nd District well, and serve their country honorably,” Huizenga said.

The following students, upon acceptance of the offer, will report to their academy as Cadets and Midshipmen this summer:

U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD:
Taylor Compton, Hamilton High School

Jacob Featherstone, Fremont High School

Kyle Pawlowski, Mona Shores High School

Harrison Willoughby, Holland High School

Brandon Venturini, Allendale High School

U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, CO:

Cody Kevin Mihm, Hamilton High School

Evan James McDowell, Hudsonville High School

U.S. Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, NY:

Casey Scott Woudenberg, Holland High School

High school students interested in applying to a service academy should request a nomination application during the spring/summer of their junior year in high school. The applications are due in Huizenga’s office by October 28th of their senior year.
