What's Happening In Washington:
Boosting Growth, Promoting Job Creation, & Fighting For Main Street
Last week, the House passed two bipartisan pieces of legislation to delay the implementation of ObamaCare. The first bill, H.R. 2667, addressed ObamaCare's employer mandate. 35 Democrats joined nearly all House Republicans in voting to delay this misguided policy for a year, as President Obama himself recommended, and the bill passed 264-141.
The second piece of legislation, H.R. 2668 - the Fairness for American Families Act, deals with ObamaCare's individual mandate. The thought behind this legislation is that if businesses get to have the mandate delayed, shouldn't all hardworking Americans be afforded that same opportunity? 22 Democrats joined House Republicans in support of H.R. 2668 and the bill passed 251-174.
The current partisan environment in Washington has afforded few opportunities to cross party lines. However, last week's votes gives me hope that even more members of President Obama's party will stand up for hardworking taxpayers on main street in the future.
Limiting The Federal Footprint, Giving Control To States, Schools, & Parents
Also last week, the House passed H.R. 5, the Student Success Act. This legislation dramatically reduces the federal role in education by returning the supervision of student performance to state and local officials. Additionally, The Student Success Act eliminates duplicative and overlapping federal programs to make sure taxpayer dollars are used more efficiently and more effectively. Lastly, this measure also supports the development and implementation of state- and locally-driven teacher evaluation systems that provide states and school districts with the tools necessary to measure an educator's influence on student achievement. H.R. 5, which I supported, passed by a vote of 221-207.
