U.S. Congressman Bill Huizenga
The Huizenga Huddle: Sept. 6, 2013

What's Happening In West Michigan:

Today marks the final day of what is known as the August District Work Period.  Over the past week, I traveled across the district and held three town halls: a "Brown Bag with Bill" in Newaygo, a more traditional town hall in Jenison and an agricultural town hall in Conklin.

Additionally, on Wednesday, I toured Freightliner in Wyoming.  The employees there were eager to engage with me about the current state of the economy. We had a great discussion on tax policy and regulatory reform as they explained how it would impact haulers in West Michigan and across the country.

Yesterday, I met with the Muskegon Rotary to discuss the situation in Syria. Later that afternoon, I sat down with the Muskegon Chronicle for a live chat and took questions from area residents.

The Michigan Minute:

In Case You Missed It:
  • The Associated Press Takes A Closer Look At The Economy: The drop in the unemployment rate in August to a 4½-year low was hardly cause for celebration. The rate fell because more people stopped looking for work. More than 300,000 people stopped working or looking for a job. Their exodus shrank the so-called labor force participation rate — the percentage of adult Americans with a job or seeking one — to 63.2 percent. It's the lowest participation rate since August 1978.
  • Rep. Dave Camp: Tax reform should help families, make the economy stronger, and simplify the tax code
