The State Of The Union

Last week, President Trump delivered his State of the Union Address before Congress and to the American people. By my count he touched on more than two dozen different issues facing our nation including strengthening the economy, supporting our men and women in uniform, and securing our borders.

I thought the President delivered a strong speech, especially when he discussed the economy. Already, millions of middle class Americans are seeing the tangible benefits from tax and regulatory reform. Bigger paychecks, better wages, stronger benefit packages, and increased retirement savings for hardworking taxpayers should be celebrated by all. Instead of jobs leaving Michigan for Mexico, American companies are investing in American workers and bringing these jobs home. This will lead to even greater opportunity and prosperity for hardworking West Michigan taxpayers who have struggled to make ends meet.

Tax Reform

My guest to this year's State of the Union was Zach Booker. Zach is a local entrepreneur who owns several West Michigan-based small businesses including Zach’s Barbershop with locations in Grandville and Hudsonville, iWear Solutions, a marketing company with locations in Norton Shores, Grand Rapids, New York, and San Diego, and West Michigan Auto Glass in Wyoming.

Zach and I discussed the positive impact tax reform will have for West Michigan job creators and hardworking middle class taxpayers on CSPAN after the State of the Union. To watch a portion of the interview, click on the picture below.

Promoting A Culture Of Life

As tens of thousands of Americans prepared to march in support of life, I discussed my unwavering commitment to defend the unborn on the House floor. To watch my speech, click on the picture below.

Under Republican leadership, the House has consistently defended the unborn and promoted a culture of life. We have passed the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would ban late-term abortions at 20 weeks. We have passed legislation to prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortions. We voted to defund Planned Parenthood and have voted to increase funding for federally qualified community health centers that promote and provide women’s health services while protecting life.

All of these legislative achievements are encouraging progress, however, our work is not done and we must continue to defend the unborn, give voice to the voiceless, and promote a culture of respect for life from its beginning sparks to its final twilight.
