Serving SW Michigan in the 119th Congress

It is an honor to continue serving Southwest Michigan as your voice in Washington. Last Friday was the first day of the 119th Congress, and I was sworn in by Speaker Mike Johnson, along side my family, as the U.S. Representative for Michigan’s 4th Congressional District.

After being sworn in, I went live on Facebook to provide an update. You can watch the video below.

Strengthening Infrastructure Across SW Michigan

Over the weekend, President Biden signed S. 4367, the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024, into law. This bipartisan legislation serves as the authorization for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to improve federally regulated water infrastructure across the nation.

I was glad to see these important measures, that I advocated for to improve infrastructure across Southwest Michigan, signed into law. By authorizing studies for Battle Creek, Holland, Kalamazoo, and St. Joe, the Army Corps of Engineers can strengthen the local economy, enhance recreational opportunities, and take steps to mitigate and address urban flooding across Southwest Michigan.

Here is a summary of my priorities that were included in S. 4367.

Sound Off: Survey Results

Just before the new year, I contacted nearly 100,000 people across Michigan's 4th District. I was reaching out because I wanted to hear directly from you about what matters most to Southwest Michigan. Specifically, I asked what constituents thought was the most important issue Congress and the incoming Trump Administration should address in the first 100 days. Below are the results.

Delivering Results on Illegal Immigration

On Tuesday, the House passed, H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, with bipartisan support – despite 159 Democrats voting against it. This bill would require ICE to “effectively and expeditiously” detain illegal immigrants who have committed theft and related crimes so they cannot continue to victimize Americans. The Senate held it's first vote to advance this important legislation last night. It is my hope that this bill will be ready to be signed into law by President Trump when he takes office.

Funding For Pediatric Cancer Research

Last weekend, President Biden signed H.R. 3391, the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0, into law. This legislation reauthorizes the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This program plays a key role in helping researchers uncover new insights into childhood cancers.

The House passed this important legislation on March 5, 2024 by a vote of 384-4. The Senate then passed it by unanimous consent on December 20, 2024.

I am glad to see this important research funded so we can continue to battle pediatric cancer and improve outcomes for children and families here in Southwest Michigan and across the nation!

Honoring President Carter

This week we also paid tribute to President Jimmy Carter. The late President was Lying in State in the Capitol Rotunda Tuesday evening through Thursday morning, and a funeral service was held in D.C. on Thursday.

Our hearts and prayers go out during this time of loss to the Carter Family as well as to those who served our nation as part of the Carter Administration.
