How I am Working to Stop a Massive Tax Increase
I am fighting for lower taxes while making sure Washington uses taxpayer dollars more efficiently. By working with the Trump Administration to eliminate wasteful spending, we can make the federal government more fiscally and financially responsible.
Last week, the House and Senate agreed on a budget reconciliation framework that will allow Congress to address wasteful spending, renew the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), and examine priorities such as eliminating taxes on tips, social security, and overtime.
Extending the TCJA is projected to cut taxes for the low-income families by 15%. However, failing to renew these tax cuts will result in the largest tax increase in modern history for Americans across all walks of life.
According to the National Association of Manufacturers, Michigan alone would see 170,000 jobs eliminated, $15.5 billion in lost wages, and $30.4 billion in lost economic output if these tax provisions expire. Nationally, the average taxpayer would see a 22% tax hike, 40 million families would see their Child Tax Credit cut in half, and an estimated six million jobs would be lost. This is why I am fighting to lower taxes, renew the TCJA, and strengthen Michigan’s economy.

Reestablishing Constitutional Checks and Balances
On April 9th, the House passed the No Rogue Rulings Act. This bill returns district courts to their constitutional authority by limiting injunctive relief orders. Article III of the U.S. Constitution limits a federal court's authority on resolving "cases" and "controversies" to providing relief only to the parties before them.
In cases that are national in nature, a randomly-selected three-judge panel may issue a nationwide injunction, and the parties may appeal an injunction directly to the Supreme Court.
The No Rogue Rulings Act restores our Constitution’s system of checks and balances. A single district court judge should not have the ability to unilaterally determine policy for the entire nation.

Safeguarding Our Elections
Earlier this year in Michigan, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office announced that 15 noncitizens illegally cast a ballot in the 2024 election. This is unacceptable, so I joined the Republican Members of the Michigan Delegation in sending a letter to Secretary Benson to demand answers on how this happened. This is just one of many examples of why safeguards need to be put in place to protect our elections. You can click on the picture below to read the full letter.

Last week, the House passed and I supported H.R. 22, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This legislation simply ensures only U.S. citizens are able to vote in federal elections by requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote.
While there is a ton of misinformation regarding this election integrity measure, there are some key points that are being ignored.
For example, if you are a citizen already registered to vote, the SAVE Act does not impact you. Additionally, the claim being peddled by some that the SAVE Act will somehow disenfranchise women is a lie. My colleague Kat Cammack shot down this false narrative during debate of the bill on the House floor. You can watch her remarks here.
As the author of the legislation Chip Roy wrote in the Federalist: “For the small fraction of individuals who have not updated their documentation to reflect a name change — though most do so quickly for general life purposes such as an I-9 form for employment, passport to travel, and Social Security card for taxes — the SAVE Act explicitly directs states to establish a process allowing them to register to vote despite a name discrepancy. The SAVE Act specifically left this to the states because name-change procedures are governed by state law, and the specific requirements, forms, fees, and processes can vary from state to state.”
The SAVE Act is a commonsense bill that won’t prevent any American from voting. What it will do is stop those who are not eligible to vote, such as the more than 10 million illegal individuals that came into the United States under the Biden Administration, from registering to vote.

Protecting Free Speech
After leading a hearing last month to help expose the State Department’s Censorship-Industrial Complex under former President Biden, I applaud the Trump Administration and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for officially closing the Global Engagement Center (GEC).
This pervasive agency was weaponized by the Biden Administration and rebranded as the Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference Hub. Despite its mandate of countering foreign propaganda and disinformation, this federal agency deployed its network of grantees and subgrantees to facilitate the censorship of Americans, especially those expressing a conservative viewpoint or a viewpoint that ran counter to the liberal establishment.
This action by the Trump Administration is another positive win for free speech and the effort to ensure that no taxpayer dollars are used to censor Americans. You can watch my opening statement from the hearing below.

Strengthening Youth Sports and Our Small Business Economy
Last week, I introduced H.R. 2850, the Youth Sports Facilities Act, with Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX). This bipartisan legislation would amend Title II of the Public Works and Economic Development Act to add youth sports facilities to the list of eligible uses of Economic Development Assistance Grants.
The Youth Sports Facilities Act is a bipartisan solution designed to bring communities together, create economic opportunity, and improve students' physical and mental well-being across the nation. For too long, an area code has determined whether students could have access to facilities or resources necessary to participate and compete. I am proud to champion the Youth Sports Facilities Act because it opens the doors for communities across Michigan and around the country to create new opportunities for children to develop critical skills, enhance local tourism, and foster small business growth.

A Win For Small Biz: An Update on the Corporate Transparency Act
Last month, the Treasury Department announced it will not enforce the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) and any related penalties against U.S. citizens or domestic reporting companies or their beneficial owners. Instead, they will look to narrow the scope of the rule to foreign reporting companies only.
In 2021, Congress made significant reforms to the U.S. anti-money laundering regime, which included the passage of the CTA. The CTA directed the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) to establish a rule that required businesses to report their beneficial ownership information. The sole purpose of the CTA is to allow law enforcement agencies the ability to detect criminal activity for those hiding behind an LLC or shell company. However, the final rule and eventual implementation, which went into effect last year, was misguided and flawed from the start.
As a small business owner myself who was personally impacted by this overreaching rule, I understand the weight of these regulations. That is why I remain committed to ensuring small business owners throughout Southwest Michigan are protected from burdensome government overreach, and I applaud the Trump Administration's willingness to act on this issue.

Increasing Innovation & Opportunity in Southwest Michigan
In the waning days of the Biden Administration, the IRS made damaging changes to the research tax credit. The new requirements included in Form 6765 will increase compliance costs, reduce the value of the research credit, and disincentivize research and innovation. This is bad for Southwest Michigan. Innovators are the driving force behind America's global competitiveness and quality of life at home. We cannot allow a government agency to stifle the groundbreaking research and growth of job creators.
I am eager to work with President Trump’s IRS to address this matter, which if properly addressed, could incentivize large investments in critical research and development in the United States for wide range of industries including manufacturers, researchers, semiconductors, engineers, drug makers, designers, and any other business that would be eligible for this tax credit. Earlier this month, I sent a letter to the IRS. You can read my full letter here.

Congratulations to Our National Champions!
Western Michigan University is on a roll, bringing home not one, but two National Championships in the last week!
For the first time ever, the Western Michigan Hockey Team won the National Championship, defeating Boston University 6-2. Just a few days later, the Western Michigan Dance Team won the Division 1 Jazz National Championship for the first time since 2007. Congratulations to these incredible student athletes!
