What's Happening In Washington:

I understand that many are frustrated with the current shutdown of the federal government, and you can add me to the list.  I didn't want this shutdown to happen. I would have liked to have had an open negotiation with the Senate, but Senate Majority Leader Reid with the support of President Obama made it clear there would be no negotiations.

Every provision, with the exception of funding our troops in the event of a government shutdown was rejected by the Senate.  The Senate even rejected the notion of sitting down with the House to negotiate a deal to prevent a shutdown.

While this was happening in Washington, back in West Michigan the Grand Rapids Press decided to weigh in with what I found to be a very one-sided editorial calling me and my colleagues "zealots."  Quite frankly, I think that is going too far, which is why I responded with my own opinion piece in the Grand Rapids Press that was posted online yesterday morning. In the op-ed I explain how House Republicans have passed multiple spending measures to fund the government in an attempt to prevent a shutdown.  You can read the entire piece on MLive before it goes to print HERE.

So What's Happening Now?

Since the shutdown, the House has adopted a step by step approach, passing multiple pieces of bipartisan legislation to get the government back up and running.  Here is what legislation the House has already passed:
  • Legislation providing funding for the National Institutes of Health, which conducts life-saving cancer research.
  • Legislation ensuring that our National Guard and military reservists continue to receive pay.
  • Legislation funding programs that support our nation's veterans, making sure they receive the benefits and assistance they deserve.
  • Legislation making certain funding is available for participants in the Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC). This Special Supplemental Nutrition Program provides nutrition assistance to low-income pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and young children. Unfortunately, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle did not join me in this vote.
I expect more action in the coming days to fund other areas of the government.  Make sure to stay up to date by following me on Twitter at @RepHuizenga and on Facebook at Facebook.com/RepHuizenga.

Additionally, you can find a chart detailing what bipartisan legislation the House has passed, including the number of Democrats supporting it HERE.

Honoring Our Veterans

An issue that has been very personal to me is the National Park Service's apparent political move to close the "open-air" monuments honoring the courage, conviction, and sacrifice of our veterans.

Essentially what is happening is the Park Service is putting up barricades, rented at additional taxpayer expense, to block off outdoor war memorials.  It's incredible to me that the Administration has found something even more petty than closing the White House to school tours and the American public.

This is the first time during a government shutdown that these "open-air" memorials have been barricaded and "closed."  Even more shameful is the latest report that the Park Service is reinforcing the barriers to obstruct access.

On Tuesday, I sent a letter to National Park Service Director Jarvis requesting he address this totally unnecessary move.  As the week rolled on, a Park Ranger was quoted as saying "we’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting."

Disgusting is too kind of a word - it's appalling.  The National Park Service is acting in an arbitrary and capricious manner in order to make the American people feel pain.  This is precisely the opposite of what should be happening, which is why I have been fighting for Veterans to gain access to the memorials built in their honor.

This week I had the honor of helping constituents from Whitehall, Holland, Wyoming and several other cities across West Michigan gain access to the WWII & Korean War Memorials.  It was truly an amazing experience to share with these local heroes.

The Road Ahead

I also wanted to make sure you are informed of how the government shutdown is impacting your ability to contact me.  Because of the lapse in appropriations, I have temporarily closed my office in Grand Haven.  The phones remain active and are being forwarded to my office in Grandville.  My Grandville office remains staffed and open.  The phone numbers to all of my offices can be found at the bottom of this email. If you need assistance or would like to weigh in on the current spending dispute, please do not hesitate to contact me.
