The Huizenga Huddle: May 24, 2013 |
Memorial Day:
This Memorial Day, let's honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their life in service to our great nation. Let's also keep in our hearts those who are still missing, those who have been wounded in combat, and those who remain in harm's way.
Earlier this week, I joined the United Service Organizations (USO) to help prepare care packages containing everyday items for our men and women who are currently serving overseas. The countless sacrifices our soldiers and their families make are unparalleled. I want to thank the USO and the many other organizations for their continued support of and commitment to our troops as well as their families.
Photo Contest:
The 2nd District has geographically changed. Help me illustrate the history and beauty of West Michigan for visitors and those new to the area by submitting landscape, monument, or landmark photos from across the District to potentially be featured on my website.
Please send photo submissions as an attachment to huizenga.photos@mail.house.gov and include your full name, the location of the picture, and the zip code to ensure the location is in the 2nd District.
What's Happening In Washington:
- Introduced H.R. 2089 - The Federal Prison Industries Competition in Contracting Act of 2013 - to level the playing for small business job creators by ending "no-bid" contracts for UNICOR/Federal Prison Industries and forcing it to compete.
- Joined The Ottawa County Patriots, Senator Ted Cruz and other elected officials to demand answers on the IRS "targeting" conservative groups.
- Helped prepare care packages for our men and women severing overseas with the USO ... we also had a special guest on hand: Cookie Monster!
- Met with Students from St. John's Lutheran School in Grand Haven at my office in Washington DC
- H.R. 3 - Voted to begin construction on the northern portion of the Keystone XL Pipeline to increase North American Energy Security and jump start job creation.
- H.R. 1911 - Voted in support of the Smarter Solutions for Students Act, a bill that reforms student loans by using a long-term, market-based approach.
- H.R. 45 - Joined the majority of my colleagues to repeal ObamaCare. I believe ObamaCare is the wrong approach to reform America's health care system because it strips many Americans of the coverage they currently enjoy and makes it harder for small businesses to operate.
