Never forgotten: Veterans Honored and Remembered at Medals Ceremony

Freedom is certainly not free and the sacrifices of so many are encapsulated into a tiny token to be displayed proudly. These tokens are the various medals, ribbons and badges earned by distinguished members of the armed forces. These decorations serve as a reminder of all they have done and what they have given in service to their country.

U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga and his staff have made it their mission to work with veterans and the families of deceased veterans in our area to help obtain these honors “earned during their valiant service on behalf of a grateful nation.”

Earlier this year, those inquiring about medals were asked to present a copy of their DD 214 to Huizenga’s staff and they then filled out the necessary forms to obtain the medals. This process can take around two months. Once Huizenga’s staff receives the medals they are presented to the veterans during a formal ceremony. According to documents from Huizenga’s office, each veteran or family receiving medals is asked if they would like to be a part of the ceremony, and those that decline had their medals sent to their home.
