Today, U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, MI-02, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, Michigan’s Congressional Delegation and members of President Gerald R. Ford’s family and cabinet attended the dedication of Ford’s statue in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the U.S. Capitol.
“This is a great way to honor a good man,” Huizenga said. “I’m glad to be able to see the statue finally unveiled: I had the privilege to be a member of the Michigan state legislature that passed the bill to put Ford’s statue in the Capitol, and now as a member of Congress took the vote earlier this year to accept the statue for the Rotunda. I also represent part of the District that Gerald Ford had as a U.S. Representative, so it’s a special connection for me and the 2nd District.” Ford was the 38th President of the United States. He was a U.S. Representative for 25 years, then was chosen as Vice President to Richard Nixon in 1973. He became president after Nixon’s resignation in 1974. Ford died in 2006. Federal law allows two statues per state to be displayed in the Hall. The state’s other is Lewis Cass, the first Governor of Michigan when it was still a territory. |
