Weekly Column: More Affordable Energy, Greater Energy Security

In order to meet our energy needs, lower prices, and create good-paying jobs, we need an energy strategy that prioritizes domestic energy development. The United States is in a unique position because of our massive reserves of natural gas.

We have the ability to provide meaningful relief and cleaner energy to communities here in America, while also exporting liquified natural gas (LNG) to our allies in Europe. Our vast resources can improve energy security at home while also countering Russia’s threat of turning off the heat for Europeans during the winter months.

On Jan. 26, President Biden and his administration announced a “pause” on LNG exports due solely to climate change and “MAGA Republicans,” according to his statement. Unfortunately, President Biden once again folded to the radical left on this issue at the expense of the United States and our allies’ economic and energy security.

As recently as December 2023, 87% of American LNG exports went to the European Union, the United Kingdom, or Asian markets. Additionally, American-produced LNG has roughly 40% lower lifecycle emissions than Russian LNG, meaning it is cleaner. President Biden’s misguided decision is allowing Russia to return to its dirty energy diplomacy while stopping our economy from reaching its full potential.

On Feb. 15, I voted in favor of the Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2024 to reverse President Biden’s misguided ban on exporting LNG. Importantly, this bill lifts all restrictions on the import and export of LNG while prohibiting trade with a person or foreign country under sanction or listed as a state sponsor of terrorism. This commonsense measure passed the House by a vote of 224-200.

Unleashing American energy independence has been a top priority for my colleagues and me this Congress. I will continue fighting against this Administration’s war on American energy.
